I wanted to take the time to post something we developed here at NEDS to help our customers and potential customers understand just how much bandwidth is necessary for their equipment. I figured why keep something like this in house when it can be of valueable service somewhere else. So here it is!
Many web hosting providers purposefully use the total amount of data transfer to trick the customer into thinking they are getting a great deal. Only after the contract is signed or the account is opened does the customer realize just how much data transfer they are getting. When the customer asks for a full 1Mbps of data transfer, they are hit with an upgrade charge. For this reason and for informational purposes, we developed a chart that we use here at NEDS that explains just how much data can be transferred per day, per week, and per month at a selected rate of transfer. Please keep in mind there are other factos that can lead to slightly less than the amount displayed here, but for informational purposes, this is a good guide to go by.
Methodology
The following chart was developed using the following steps:
- (60 minutes an hour * 60 Seconds in an Hour)*24 Hours in a day = 86400 seconds in a day.
- Take the 86400 seconds and multiply it by 0.125 to convert the result into bytes. (1 Bit = 8 Bytes)
- Now multipled it by the data transfer rate; 1 (as in 1Mbps).
- This produces a very large number so we mutliplied the result by .001 in order to covert the data into gigabytes for better understanding.
